A company in the Louisiana Technology Park has developed a product to block mobile devices in cars in an attempt to reign in the number of people who drive while distracted. cellcontrol, developed by obdEdge, detects when a user's vehicle is in motion and prevents phone calls, text messages and e-mails from going out or coming in, except for 911 or certain exceptions. Once the vehicle is stopped, cellcontrol allows all the messages to come through.

Sean Brown, director of business development for obdEdge, says there are more than 500,000 accidents with injury each year, caused by drivers using mobile devices while they are behind the wheel. “We know cellcontrol has the ability to dramatically reduce these numbers, hopefully lowering insurance premiums, worker’s compensation claims, vehicle accidents and ultimately saving lives,” Brown says.
